SNORKELING AT “HOL CHAN MARINE RESERVE AND SHARK RAY ALLEY”

ENJOY SOME OF THE BEST SNORKELING IN THE WORLD WITHIN 15 MINUTES BOAT RIDE SOUTH OF DOWNTOWN SAN PEDRO! If you are not a certified diver to enjoy the greater depths of our pristine reef system or maybe a diver wanting to enjoy a relaxing snorkeling adventure this is definitely the excursion for you. If you are in San Pedro and there’s one marine adventure you would like to do, then this is definitely one you won’t regret.

The "Hol Chan Marine Reserve" and "Shark & Ray Alley" are among the most famous sites near Ambergris Caye which is home to more than 200 species of fish and Marine creatures. At the Hol Chan (Mayan for little channel) "Little Channel" you can snorkel with an abundance of fish and marine species. The "cut" is approximately 23m (75ft) wide and 9m (30 ft) in depth. Your guide will let you in water starting at around 1.5m (5ft) where you will quickly come into contact with large schools of jacks, groupers, snappers and many other species of fishes. Your guide then escorts you to the “Channel” where you will see pristine coral formations along with sea turtles, spotted-eagle rays, and much more.

After a wonderful snorkeling experience, you will board the vessel and go on a 10 Minute boat ride to "Shark & Ray Alley" to enjoy a friendly but trilling experience with large numbers of friendly Nurse Sharks, hundreds of fishes and Southern Stingrays in their natural habitat.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is Belize's oldest Marine Reserve; The name interpreted in English 'little channel." The reserve was formed primarily as a community-based initiative due to concern over the high level of uncontrolled, often destructive fishing and diving activities in the area. For several years, local fishermen often cleaned their catch in Shark Ray Alley, located just inside the reef and about 1 mile to the south of Hol Chan snorkel site. The fishermen noticed that their activity had attracted many Nurse Sharks and Southern Sting Rays and the word rapidly spread amongst the dive operators and the area quickly became a very popular snorkel site within the barrier reef thus making them ideal for snorkelers and beginning divers. Also, this is one of the only trips apart from the Blue Hole/Lighthouse Reef Atoll trip that both divers and snorkelers are on the same vessel. You should not miss out on this amazing trip.
